Divorce, Family Law Attorney: Kingston, Poughkeepsie and Goshen

Divorce and other family law cases involve financial and legal issues that must be understood before entering the courtroom.

At the law office of Jonathan D. Katz, I review the financial situation of my clients, explaining how the court will likely divide their marital assets and debt, determine child and spousal support payments and assign child custody. Focused on protecting both the interest of you and your children, I consult accountants, tax experts and financial planners if necessary to evaluate the value of closely held businesses, locate hidden assets, determine the value of investments and prepare you for life after divorce.

As your divorce attorney, I fight any attempt to assign debt to you that isn't yours while making sure you receive a portion of the assets you are entitled to. Be prepared to protect your legal and financial rights and interests — contact family law attorney and divorce lawyer Jonathan D. Katz today.

Helping Families Find Solutions That Work

  • Postdivorce modification of court orders
  • Spousal maintenance - spousal maintenance, spousal support and alimony

The terms of a divorce settlement or resolution of a family law dispute are binding. They cannot be changed according to the wishes of the people involved without the approval of the court. The division of marital property is only subject to change if you are able to prove it was arrived at by fraud.

Postdivorce Modifications

If you fall behind on child or spousal support payments due to illness or loss of employment, it's essential that you immediately speak with my office so I can ask the court to consider your change of circumstance. Otherwise, without a modification proceeding, your ex-spouse may initiate an enforcement proceeding against you, which could result in serious legal complications.

Support Violations ◦ Enforcement

On the other hand, if you are owed alimony or your former spouse is behind on child support payments, an enforcement proceeding can result in garnished wages and other penalties necessary for bringing payments in arrears current. Or if the custodial parent of your children has denied you visitation rights granted by the court, my office will enter a motion to enforce the visitation schedule contained in your divorce settlement.
